Exploring Daegu University’s Cafe Scene: My Go-To Study Spots

I started attending Daegu University in the winter term of 2020. I wanted to find a couple spots that offer quality products, good atmosphere, a reasonable music volume and a relatively convenient location. I have been pretty successful in this endeavor and I wanted to share my findings with my readers so they can quickly get into a studying groove. And of course feed the caffeine addition!

Margaux Plain

I hope you aren’t on a diet because this will be the cafe to break it. With by far the best selection of pastries, cakes, breads, sandwiches, yogurt, and various drinks, this is the cafe that keeps giving. Selections here rotate, but the best sellers are always available.

The boast about their strawberry shortcake being their best product, and I can’t help but to agree. But there is a wide variety of both sweet and savory breads, so this cafe can meet and taste.

This massive complex has two buildings, two floors and outdoor area and private style booths. Parking is also plentiful. The style is modern and sleek with an open concept design and ‘pool’ out front. I’m unsure if its because of covid 19 that it isn’t filled. Due to the cafes size, it’s not uncomfortable to work in groups here or talk without bothering other people.

But you will need to take a bus or a 30 minute walk to get here. Luckily there are a couple buses that drop you off about 3 minutes away, so it is manageable. In addition the music is classical at a medium to low volume – giving in a more relaxed atmosphere.

While there is no membership card for free drinks, they offer 1,000 won refills on ice americanos – be sure to keep your receipt to present tp the cashier.

Night and Day

This lake side cafe has two floors as well as outdoor seating, perfect for the spring and late summer times. It took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to find this cafe even though its so close to the school, but now since I have found it I’ll be taking better advantage of this spot.

Coming in first place due to its beautiful location and nice atmosphere is Night and Day. Located right on Daegu University’s lake, its an amazing place to relax and watch the sunset.

Coffee selection is good, though slightly marked-up due to its location and the view – which is great from both floors.

This is a cafe I frequent more when I want to meet people than study alone in part because the music tends to be a little loud and mainstream.

There’s the additional excitement of being able to people watch, as the cafe over looks a popular fishing spot.

Monede

Monede stands out and I frequent the most due to convenience, staff and comfortable atmosphere. This cafe is located directly under the Daegu University gym, which I often frequent (4-5 days week) and has numerous small tables with an open, non-cluttered design.

But I may be a little bias in my assessment. Due to the lack of customers from the Corona school closures, I’ve been able to become friends with the cafe owner who is extremely nice and has been an amazing source of language exchange and Korean language practice. As a result, I’m most comfortable here as it feels homely and helped to make me feel grounded as students have cycled in and out of the language program.

With each drink ordered you are given a small piece of chocolate, a nice little reward after a hard session in the gym. Coffee and treat selection is average, but adequate. They offer a loyalty card, the 10th drink is free. You can follow the cafe owner on instagram @jin8jjan

유투카페

Sometimes you just need to go on a little trip (like a 15 minute bus ride) t0 relax in a different environment. With a beautiful roof top seating area, this cafe has a fun an atomsphere perfect for an escape from campus.

With delicious smoothes and a cake that looks like a piece of cheese, I recommend 유투가페 in Hayang. This cafe is on the smaller size but if you go on a weekday its not too crowded.

Hans Coffee

This smaller cafe located in front of Daegu University has a higher end selection of coffee with homemade cookies and a nice music selection. This cafe is located next to the main off-campus restaurants in the area, making it a great post-lunch study stop. There are two tables in the back, outside that over look some greenery and the water. Additionally, there is individual seating that faces the window out the front of the cafe, great spot to wave at friends from.

There is a membership card and its aggressive! With spots for 50 drink stamps and standard rewards throughout, this cafe knows its serving you quality and you will be coming back for more.

This is a frequent stop for me because of their European style cappuccino, which is delicious.

This cafe can get a little loud due to its small size and seating can be a bit difficult. I had these problems even during the covid-19 outbreak, so I can’t imagine how busy it could get when the regular semester rolls around.

A shoutout to -> Mega Coffee

I’ve never been inside of this discount coffee chain for more than 3 minutes, but with the amount of time I’ve spent waiting for my coffee outside of the establishment it deserves a shout out. The staff is very nice and I sometimes get free macaroons, can’t argue with that.

Other cafes- Future exploration

In and around Daegu University and the Hayang area there is no shortage of cafes. All the major chains are located a short distance from the university. Additionally, Hayang is full of small cafes and restaurants worth exploring. I’m currently complying a list of great small local places that are worth going to at least once!

Let me know what you think of my recommendations and if there are any you would add!

Near Daegu University there are 0 cafes that open before 8:30am and only Paris Baguette on campus is open before the 9:30 language class

My continued living nightmare
